There it is metabolized by intestinal bacteria and the resulting fermentation produces a lot of gas. Unabsorbed lactose and fermentation products also raise the osmotic pressure of the colon, causing an increased flow of water into the bowels.
All of this leads to many digestive symptoms, like:
